First endangered mussels successfully raised in captivity by NRI researchers

Success! 

The NRI freshwater mussel research team at the Dallas Center were successful in the first captive raising of an endangered mussel in the state. A sneak peek at what's going on under the mussel team's microscope this week: the first Popenaias popeii, or Texas Hornshell, raised in a lab. 

These little ones measure around 200 micrometers in the photos, and if you look closely, you can see a foot extended outside the shell. This is a difficult feat (mussels are finicky). More to come...
