Reversing the Quail Decline December Newsletter

December, 2019

The end of the year is a time of celebration for many, but for quail it's often a time of hardship. This month we have an episode of Dr. Dale on Quail that explains why winter is such a tough time for these little birds. Plus we've got a new online lesson all about quail songs and calls.

What's new with RQDI?

We spent a day at Silverlake Elementary school, introducing kids to a career in wildlife! Bonnie Blue did a great job and our "Skins and Skulls" display, which showcases quail predators, was also a hit.
With the holiday season upon us, it's a time to reflect and give thanks. What we're thankful for is YOU: for our landowners who create quail habitat, our hunters who carry on their heritage, and all our wildlife enthusiasts--thank you!

Resources for Students of Quail

"If We Make It Through December"

The latest episode of the Dr. Dale on Quail Podcast takes a look at how cold weather impacts quail. Low temps, little food, and sparse cover make for a perfect (winter) storm of challenges that make this a difficult time of year for quail.

"Sounds a Quail Makes"

"poor, Bob-WHITE"
"chip-churr"
"puk-kwaw-cah"

If any of that seems like gibberish to you, you might need to review your quail songs and calls. This online lesson will teach you the most common sounds made by our 4 native Texas quail species.

Check it out here.

"Texas Quail Atlas"

Have you taken a look at the Quail Atlas yet? If not, we promise it's worth your time to check it out, as a series of unique maps are used to tell the story of the quail decline.
You can find it here.

Video of the Month

"Every living, breathing moment of a quail's life is dictated by the threat of predation." There may be no time of year when that statement is more relevant than right now, when cover is scarce and raptors are out in force. Learn how careful management can help mitigate the threat to quail.

Happy Holidays!

The Quail Decline Initiative would like to wish all of our readers a safe and happy holiday season. May it be filled with food, family and fun! We're already excited for what next year will bring and can't wait to share that journey with you.
