This publication describes the different habitat requirements of Texas' 4 resident quail species: northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), scaled quail (Callipepla squamata), Gambel’s quail (Callipepla gambelii), and Montezuma quail (Cyrtonix
montezumae). Loss of habitat is thought to be a significant contributing factor to the decline of quail in Texas, but it can be addressed through management practices that promote ample food, water, shelter and space.
