Authors: American's Longleaf Restoration Initiative

The Longleaf Partnership Council is excited to announce the release of the 2024 America’s Longleaf Range-wide Accomplishment Report. The annual Accomplishment Report demonstrates the importance of longleaf pine forests and details the hard work of the dedicated teams that make conserving them their goal. This year’s Accomplishment Report highlights over 2.7 million acres of accomplishments across the historic range, showcasing the dedication of partners who have worked tirelessly to enhance biodiversity, promote compatible land use, sustain military readiness, and protect the longleaf pine ecosystem. America’s Longleaf is especially proud of two momentous achievements: two million acres of longleaf pine gained through planting and silvicultural practices, and 20 million acres of prescribed fire since 2010! The report details achievements from America’s Longleaf partners that include:

  • Planted 100,260 acres of new longleaf pine
  • Protected 24,193 acres through acquisitions and easements
  • Applied prescribed fire to over 2.2 million acres
  • Performed maintenance activities on 272,358 acres
  • Applied silvicultural activities to 5,308 acres to convert existing forestland to longleaf-dominant forests

SERPPAS continues to support America’s Longleaf goals by focusing on promoting prescribed fire and proactive conservation of at-risk and listed species across the longleaf range, in partnership with DOD, states, and other federal and local partners. The DOD has remained an instrumental partner in the bid for longleaf conservation and their efforts continue to safeguard military readiness, preserve working lands that benefit the local economy, alleviate safety concerns, and make significant contributions to the goals of America’s Longleaf. In 2024, the DOD burned 400,000 acres of existing longleaf forest and established 11,000 acres of new longleaf, while also facilitating the creation of easements on 8,900 acres adjacent to installation boundaries. Through the DOD’s REPI program, as of 2024 approximately 50,000 acres of longleaf around Fort Stewart have been permanently protected to ensure the continued use of its controlled airspace for training.
