Updates And Trends in Landowner Demographics and their Relationship with Wildlife Management
Authors: Angelica Lopez and Daniela Barrientos
The Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute’s long-standing Texas Landowner Survey (TLS) was developed to assist landowners and the natural resource professionals who help them. Over the last 10 years, TLS has described landowners, their land and wildlife management preferences, and their needs. In this report, three datasets (United States Census; United States Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture, TLS) guide the description of Texans, landowners, and their land and wildlife management practices. Updated landowner demographic descriptions at a statewide and regional level provide a status on intergenerational land transfers, among other variables. Landowners, who comprise 1% of the state’s population yet help drive our economy and steward land resources that afford many nature benefits, manage their land for wildlife, even if they do not receive income from their land. Landowner tax incentives are discussed, along with a description and comparison of land and wildlife management practices at a statewide and regional level.
