Communities across Texas face mounting challenges from climate change, making the ways in which we manage our land more crucial than ever. Land management, conservation, and nature-based solutions will be critical strategies for protecting and sustaining essential water resources, supporting community resilience, and mitigating future climate change. This chapter provides an overview of climate action strategies and explores aspects of the nexus between land and the climate challenge. The chapter outlines broad ecological and watershed management principles that form the foundation of landscape-scale efforts aimed at building community resilience. We examine policies and approaches adopted by federal, state, and local governments to encourage beneficial actions on private lands, along with specific programs that promote climate action through financial and technical assistance, incentives, education, regulatory approaches, and partnership initiatives. Lastly, we briefly explore private market initiatives that support natural climate solutions, such as carbon stock preservation, increased carbon sequestration, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
