Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society awards received by NRI
NRI staff receive awards, recognition at meetings
Several Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute (formerly Institute of Renewable Natural Resources) staff members won awards and received recognition at recent scientific meetings.
Awards and recognition at the awards ceremony of the 53rd annual Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society meeting, held in San Antonio, included:
- Ross Anderson, Addie Engeling, Dr. Roel Lopez, Brian Pierce and Kevin Skow and former staff Amy Grones and Todd Snelgrove received Outstanding Technical Article for the Texas Land Trends report Status update and trends of Texas rural working lands.
- Ross Anderson, Addie Engeling, Amanda Dube, Kevin Skow and Alison Lund received Outstanding Digital/Electronic Media for the Texas Land Trends website.
- Andy James was named a 2017 Fellow for the James G. Teer Leadership Institute. The institute is designed to provide leadership and management skills to natural resource professionals.
- Carlos “Lalo” Gonzalez, an IRNR employee and doctorate student in Texas A&M University’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Science, received the Clarence Cottam Award for the best student paper at the annual Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society Meeting. His submitted paper was “Desert bighorn sheep habitat: a probability occurrence distribution model at a landscape level.”
Several staff also presented during a special Endangered Species Act Symposium on “Candidate Species in Texas: What’s on the Horizon and the Role of Private Lands,” in which they discussed the institute’s endangered species work. Presenters were Mike E. Marshall, Dr. Ashley M. Long, Dr. Wade A. Ryberg, Dr. Charles R. Randklev, Dr. Lydia Cao and Toby J. Hibbitts. IRNR Director Dr. Roel Lopez served as moderator.
At the annual meeting of the Texas Chapter American Fisheries Society, research assistant Jennifer Morton received an award for her thesis research. She also recently received a student travel award to attend the 2017 Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society meeting in Cleveland, Ohio to present her thesis research.
